Revamping the Playground

One of my favorite non-profits in the charlotte area, Hands on Charlotte, holds a monthly BIG Project. these BIG projects are large scale volunteers opportunities. this past saturday, Hands on Charlotte teamed up with Charlotte Bobcats' Take Time Out and Blue Max Materials to re-mulch the playground at Barringer Academic Center. it was great to see all the volunteers from numerous organizations and individual volunteers working together to make the playground a safer and softer area.

Recycling the Un-Recyclable

There is an ever-changing question about what you can recycle and what you can't... Recently North Carolina changed their laws on what can be placed in your recycling cans. They also made it it illegal to throw plastic bottles in landfills and/or your trash. Around the holidays, these laws make it difficult to recycle many of things that come with receiving presents: styrofoam and bubble wrap is not recyclable for most of the year. Recently Rainbow Recycling teamed up with some other environmentally friendly people and organizations to take these annoying non-landfill-friendly items out of the trash. They collected any items that are normally not accepted at recycling centers. This was a great way to get the word out about what is and isn't accepted by recyclers and different ways to recycle those items anyway!

Building Downtown...One Tree at a Time

Asheville GreenWorks has been around since the 80's, working to make Asheville the "green machine" it is. they have planted thousands of trees across the county at schools, parks and downtown. even though it's winter, the trees downtown and in the parks are still a beautiful reminder that caring for our environment is vital and can make all the difference in the atmosphere of a city. Since Asheville is such a environmentally friendly city, how different and how weird would it look if our downtown has no trees in sight? Asheville GreenWorks helped to plant a majority of the trees lining the sidewalks and streets of downtown Asheville. The plentiful greenery is probably overlooked by many who are used to the numerous trees lining the streets; but as soon as they travel to a city with just a few trees hovering under the skyscrapers, they realize the uniqueness of our "green" Asheville.
