Finding Green in Charlotte

being from the mountains, and specifically from Asheville, i love the outdoors. when i first moved to charlotte i didn't think i could ever live here because there's no real greenery...however, i recently was told about Four Mile Creek Greenway. as it's name says, its 4 miles of boardwalk along the creek. the perfect getaway to get back in touch with nature while still remaining close to the city. its the best of both worlds.

Hands On The Environment

Hands on Charlotte hosted their monthly BIG Project at South Meck High School. they re-mulched and raked the yard in front of the school, laid down a new brick walkway and planted some beautiful bushes. it was great to see all the volunteers working together to beautify one of the many CMS schools. next month, we head to West Meck to do some landscaping there. the Charlotte BobCats and Wells Fargo "Took Time Out" and volunteered at this program just like the last one.

Focus For Humanity

i am a humanitarian photographer and since that is a little different than most careers, i get really excited when i find other photographers whose passion is to help the less fortunate through their photography. that's why i was so happy when my friend directed me to Focus for Humanity. their main purpose and goal is to connect photographers with non-profits and fund different projects. they supply grants to budding humanitarian photographers and host competitions and fundraising projects for others to raise money. this is exactly the type of organization that i need and i'm so happy i found them. they're all about helping those of us that need a little extra push to begin the process. they are a Lorax for humanitarian photographers.

Kids can do it all...

On saturday, Charlotte Parent magazine held their annual Young Authors celebration. they give kids a contest to write some books. after receiving over 400 books they narrowed it down to the winners from each age group. these kids got to read their awesome books to the crowd and received tons of applause! they were so happy to write and share these books with everyone. it was a great and cute experience! Sir Purr also made a surprise visit and read his own book about his life and where he came from.

The Lorax Project...What I'm All About!

Dr. Seuss knows how to get people involved and get people interested. no one can argue that. his books appeal to everyone, of all ages, races, cultures and backgrounds. no matter where you live, are from or where you're going, Dr.Seuss's books can mean something to you. The Lorax is a perfect example: i dont know anyone that cant appreciate the environment after reading this book. and its not just about protecting the environment. i take it as an example to protect anything that 'cannot speak for themselves'. the Lorax may be a fictional character but i believe there is a Lorax is every one of us. and Dr. Seuss's The Lorax Project proves that there are things that anyone can do to protect things. you could say Dr.Seuss is geared towards kids, yes thats true, so therefore this project is geared towards kids....and that means even kids can make a difference. you can make a difference....even if its just educating others about extinct species or different oppressions happening across the globe. you can make a difference! i feel so strongly about this topic. as i'm sure you can tell!! please help me in becoming a Lorax: for whatever topic you feel strongly about!!

Hiking is good for the Lorax's soul...

since the Lorax is all about preserving the trees and being an environmentalist, it seems fit (a week after i received my own Lorax tattoo) that i would find the opportunity to go on a lovely hike last weekend with some friends. the weather was perfect! it wasn't too hot or cold and i was able to wear my lovely chaco's and eat my lunch barefoot. the perfect environment. going on these day trips to see the beauty of my world just fortifies my decision to be a Lorax. if there weren't people protecting this environment, those trails would overgrow and the views would go un-noticed. just another reason for us all to find something to be a Lorax for.
