a blog about being a lorax to the world. a lorax is anyone/anything that stands as an advocate. the lorax is literally a smallish, brownish creature from Dr. Seuss's The Lorax. He "speaks for the trees, for the trees have no tongues". the ending quote always resonates with my humanitarian efforts, "unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot; nothing's going to get better. its not."

Angels and Sparrows
I visited a soup kitchen, Angels and Sparrows, this morning and it was amazing. I went to take pictures for my portfolio but i am definitely going back to take some more pictures and hang out with the volunteers and people they serve. everyone was welcoming and most everyone knew each other. Sandy, the executive director of Angels and Sparrows is an awesome lady who wants to help the community and feed the people. it was an amazing experience.

People you should meet...
A popular "movement" right now is to interview fellow photographers and classmates to see how they make their business work and what they believe about photography. my fellow class-mate interviewed me and i looked for other photographers in our area that have been doing that in the past. one of my favorite humanitarian photographers is Gary S. Chapman. he recently interview other humanitarian photographers and their answers helped me build my business and my photography. http://garyschapman.com/blog/2010/12/13/humanitarian-photographers-day-1/
GreenWorks Working...
i took so many pictures of Asheville Greenworks that i decided to post more... there was a dumpster that had clearly been there for many many years because there was a fairly large tree growing in the dumpster!! they filled the huge dumpster truck with wood and probably 20 bags of trash. and it was all on a volunteer basis. these people are awesome.

Seussinspired
i have always had a love for Dr.Seuss and his books. they teach lessons to young and old. i've previously interpreted The Lorax by Dr.Seuss. my new series is based on Oh! The Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss. this book is all about attaining your dreams and going to the places you want to go. it talks about the hard times you'll go through and sometimes obstacles will come but you can attain your dreams!! my concept is to take pictures that are directly interpreted from quotes in the book. other pictures are photographs of a subject holding up photographs of the places they've been.

my fellow student, Jenn Rogers, recently started a blog interviewing fellow photographers. she's talking to students, teachers and professionals in the area. she has a lot of great questions and you really get to know the photographer by reading the interview. at least, i think so, but then again i was the first interviewee so i feel like i got to know myself. i was honored to be the first featured student on her blog and cant wait to read the other interviews and see how we all differ. www.photographersyoushouldknow.blogspot.com
She asked for some of my "Mona-Lisa's" and of course i gave her my elephant picture and some pictures from Africa, since they are my favorite, and i included some pictures from other random non-profit shoots i've done while at school. it was a great experience!
Thanks Jenn!!
